Bear Engasser blasted a two-run homer into the night as Family Matters held off a furious rally by Benchwarmers to claim the Feather River Recreation & Park District Men's Summer Slowpitch Softball League championship with a 17-16 win on Sept. 11.
Family Matters had blasted Goon Squad 22-0, while Benchwarmers upset No. 1-seeded Gold City Beers, 17-15 behind the hitting strength of Ryan Armitage, Ben Archuleta and Logan Smith. GCB was led by Tyler Brandt.
In the title game, Family Matters jumped out to a 14-4 lead, but the 'Warmers chipped away at that lead on the strength of deep shots from Dustin Clary and Armitage.
In the seventh, Armitage capped a five-run rally with a three-run blast that gave his team a 16-15 lead. In the bottom half of the frame, Tim Hill laced a one-out single and Engasser followed with a near-canal shot over the fence in right-center field.
Jake Fox had four hits for the victors, who finished the season 9-1.
